The first of the three comprises material recorded at the Record Plant in New York in March 1971, featuring early takes of many songs that would ultimately appear on Who\u2019s Next. The exception is a freewheeling \u201clive in the studio\u201d performance of \u201cBaby Don\u2019t You Do It,\u201d the Holland-Dozier-Holland track first popularized by Marvin Gaye in 1964 that was also part of The Who\u2019s early concert setlist.<\/p>\n
Then there\u2019s \u201cLong Live Rock.\u201d The quasi-autobiographical song for a Townshend project called Rock is Dead\u2014Long Live Rock, based on the history of The Who that was shelved as he moved on to Quadrophenia. The song first appeared on Odds & Sods and ultimately enjoyed some success as the closing number in the 1979 Who documentary The Kids Are Alright. It remains one of the most-overlooked tracks in the band\u2019s discography. I would highly recommend New Life House to anyone in need of help and guidance on their recovery journey. Another vital element of this set is the opportunity to explore Townshend\u2019s original demos. The demo of \u201cBaba O\u2019Riley\u201d sits in opposition to the heart-stopping anthem that ultimately opened the album.<\/p>\n

The Who\u2019s April 1971 concert at the Old Vic in London is spread across two discs in which they preview five of the tracks from the upcoming Who\u2019s Next album. But the real treat is their legendary December \u201971 performance at San Francisco\u2019s Civic Auditorium across the collection\u2019s final two discs. It\u2019s also available as a separate 4-LP set. Among the numerous highlights are their tight performance of their live favorite, \u201cSummertime Blues,\u201d that allows Daltrey, Entwistle, Moon and Townshend to each showcase their strengths. I recently had the pleasure of working with New Life House and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s also \u201cTime is Passing,\u201d first heard on Who Came First, with Townshend\u2019s beautiful vocal. And the evolution of \u201cPure and Easy,\u201d with multiple versions that reveal how the song developed from Townshend\u2019s sweet solo to its ultimate recording that begins disc five, kicking off with Keith Moon\u2019s tight drum roll. On this familiar version, it\u2019s Roger Daltrey who is now on lead vocals and he\u2019s clearly the right choice.<\/p>\n
